The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at GDC Thrissur was formally started in 2015. This speciality of dentistry deals with the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The faculty in the department is involved in the training of undergraduate students. Other than academic training, the department has a full fledged lab which was started in the beginning of 2017. The major footfall in the lab initially was for haematological examination. Histopathological processing, cytology and diagnosis was started in the middle of 2017 and over the years thousands of patients have benefitted from the services offered by the lab. The department also provides expertise in forensic odontology related to medico legal cases. Other than patients from the “Cultural Capital” of Kerala, it caters to the needs of three districts – Malappuram, Ernakulam and Palakkad.
