Government Dental College Thrissur

Established in 2015, the Government Dental College, Thrissur is one of the premier Dental Colleges in Kerala, providing quality education in dentistry and catering to the needs of people especially the indigent sections from Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts.

As per G.O(MS) No.263/2012/H&FWD Dated 07-08-2012 administrative sanction was accorded for the establishment of new dental college attached to Government Medical College, Thrissur. Subsequently Government accorded permission for the Dental College to function with 9 departments with an annual intake of 50 students. As per G.O(MS) No.99/2015/H&FWD dated 12-05-2012, 51 posts of teaching and nonteaching staffs were created. Later the college started functioning with effect from 2015.

The G.O (Rt) No.617/2014/H&FWD Dated 22-02-2014 accorded administrative sanction for the construction of Dental College, Thrissur (1st phase) by appointing M/s HLL Life care Ltd, Thiruvananthapuram as the project management consultancy agency. The first phase construction has been completed and Thrissur dental college is currently functioning in the new building situated in the campus sprawling in a 5 acre land, since 2016. The college is designed with five floors and an area of 18059 sq.mtrs with future expansion and development including a postgraduate wing and research facilities envisioned.

Over the years, our college has earned the reputation of being one of the best dental colleges in the state. It was formed with the objective of providing quality education in dentistry. From its inception the mission of the Govt. Dental College, Thrissur has been to improve the oral health care of the population. Our training programs are focused on the provision of quality educational experiences to train clinically competent dentists to address the oral health issues of the community. We achieve this through service, training, teaching and research.

The college is affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences from the first batch onwards i.e, 2015 admission. The institution offers dental and oral health care education at multiple levels. The course offered by the college is recognized by Dental Council of India (DCI).

Our nine fully fledged Departments render all types of oral, dental and maxillofacial specialty treatments to children, adults and those with special health care needs. Pre clinical Conservative lab & Phantom head lab, Pre clinical Prosthodontics lab & Phantom head lab, Pre clinical Orthodontics and Pedodontics lab, Tooth morphology, Oral histology and Oral Pathology labs are also functioning in the college.

Achievements:

•  Our first batch( 14 students out of 36- 2015 admission) got admission for MDS in state and national level.
  
• Public health Dentistry Department take pride in having the state of art mobile dental unit, fully equipped mobile dental unit, portable dental chairs and other equipments which ensure that oral health care is delivered to all areas which are in need of oral health care. Department caters to the needs of urban & rural population by two peripheral centres . Dental Clinics at urban health centre, Paravattani and Family health centre, Tholur is fully competent to render good oral health care to the needy.
• In 2017 October Prosthodontics department conducted CDE programme for undergraduate students of all dental colleges in Kerala, the training called REBASE PG which was conducted by Kerala Chapter of Indian Prosthodontics Society in collaboration with Kerala Health University.
• ORAL PATHOLOGY ENCLAVE 2018 was launched for the first time in Kerala in collaboration with Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Association in remembrance of Dr. Jacob Zachariah, the renowned Oral Pathologist.
• Students of GDC, Thrissur in addition to their academic excellence have won many awards in extra curricular activities also.
• A number of awareness classes, seminars and school-level camps are conducted for the public on NO TOBACCO DAY and WORLD ORAL HEALTH DAY with emphasis on tobacco and drug addiction. The Tobacco Counseling Center is run by students and teachers.
• Blood Donation Camp organized by NSS unit on World Health Day reflect the social commitment of the Dental College.
• As part of World Oral Health Day and Palliative Care Day, Oral Cancer Day, screening camps are organized and dental health awareness classes are also provided.
• Numerous research works are being conducted even though being a under graduate institution. Two of our faculties are doing PhD.
• Proceedings has started for the implementation of E- hospital, OP digitalization, etc.
