Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics holds pride in being the first specialty of dentistry. It entails the supervision, interception, and correction of irregularities and malpositions of teeth. It also addresses the growth deformities of the jaws and face; hence, the specialty is rightly referred to as “Dentofacial Orthopedics”. Due to the emphasis on facial aesthetics, it remains as one of the most demanding branches.
The department is equipped with facilities for catering the aesthetic and functional needs of people especially from Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad districts. Currently, we are a team of four permanent full-time teaching faculties, three Senior Residents, one DORA, one dental hygienist, and two support staffs.
The services we offer include comprehensive evaluation of dentofacial aesthetics and treatment planning, management of orthodontic problems using wide range of removable and fixed appliances, modification of growth using myofunctional and orthopaedic appliances, management of complex malocclusions using temporary anchorage devices, diagnosis and management of airway problems, orthognathic surgical support for complex craniofacial growth abnormalities.
With the new technological advancements currently in place, the specialty has grown in leaps and bounds. The state of the art appliances including Self Ligating Brackets, Pre-adjusted Edgewise appliances, aesthetic alternatives like Ceramic brackets and Clear aligners for selected cases are presently been practiced in the department. Multidisciplinary approaches including adult orthodontics, orthognathic surgeries are carried out to eliminate severe aesthetic and functional deformities, which can be a life-changing experience for the patients.
