The Public Health Dentistry Department of Government Dental College, Thrissur strives to achieve excellence in providing leadership and expertise in population-based dentistry, oral health surveillance, community-based disease prevention and health promotion along with patient care, teaching and research. Formerly known as community dentistry, Public Health Dentistry Department renders its services by focusing on an All-Inclusive Approach in rendering services to both the urban and rural areas of Thrissur, reaching all sections of the society. It strives to enhance the oral health of the community by training the budding dentists to render preventive and promotive oral health care services especially in the rural areas.
Apart from the routine clinical works, the department meets the oral health needs of the public through its well-established dental clinics at Urban Family Health Centre in Paravattani and at Community Health Centre, Tholur.
The department is privileged with a state-of-the-art mobile dental unit which caters to the dental needs of the community. Fully dental chairs, portable dental units and patient education unit ensures that total oral health reaches the needy in and around Thrissur and neighbouring distrtics. The department has been actively involved in organizing mass awareness campaigns, audio-visual health talks, health education exhibitions, street plays and health rallies on special occasions. The department also has an oral health education unit and museum at the department for providing dental education to our students and general population, and to showcase all the dental health education models prepared indigenously in the department, research works, and posters. The department is also equipped with the maintenance of TCC (Tobacco Cessation Clinic) with referral system from all other departments of the college. Services offered includes awareness to patients, dependency assessment, and habit intervention.
